My Psylocke Redesign

A conversation I heard a while back on the ComicVine.com padcast partially inspired me to try mmy own hand at redesigning Psylocke's costume. The classic skintight bathing suit design makes no real sense. I have nothing against the original Psylocke outfit. Back when I first started reading X-MEN comics, I remember it was Jim Lee's work that I was first exposed to. Pslocke played a noticeable role in getting me to come back. I was a preteen/pubescent boy at the time. What do you expect? Well, I grew up and became mature-------ish. I can notice how ridiculous that outfit can look.

Sometimes, it feels as if people who make comics shouldn't design the clothes. Too many artists are stuck in the mindset of what a comic costume should look like, and they don't think out of that box. A lot of redesigns have characters in full body suits, which is equally as impractical. In my redesign, I took a lot of inspiration from the BLEACH character Soi Fon, a little bit from the NARUTO series, and some stuff that's my own taste. I wanted her outfit to look like clothes, but I leaned more on Japanese culture to match her ethnicity.

Here is some interesting trivia. The Japanese word for "female ninja" is くノ一(kunoichi). This is actually the woman 女 (onna) kanji broken apart. Look closely at the onna kanji and you can see the three parts of kunoichi. It's even the proper writing order for writing "onna".

I hope you enjoy my design, I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

As an eternal fan of the impractical, illogical Baywatch Psylocke outfit... I gotta say I love this redesign.

Not a fan of the "green eyes" thing, because Miao Yin is the only Asian who gets a pass on that one, but... I still love the concept. :XD:

(I'm half-white, half-Korean myself so the eye color thing has always been a pet peeve.) LOL

I really do hate the way comic designers make costumes. Just look at what they did to Lady Shiva in DC in the New 52-era. No world class assassin would put a blade on their body they didn't have complete control over.

I washed my hands of DC years ago, as far as the comics go.

Sort of how I feel about mainstream publishers and stick with manga. Events have meanings.

About the practicality, I like how her top is properly secured from the front unlike say... Wonder woman. I just can't help but facepalm at her patriotic bikini. It occurred to me that if someone Would get a hold of her top she could probably undue the knot on her back and slip out of it downwards.
Mind if I ask what exactly is that pattern on the sides of her top? Leaves maybe?

All around I really like it, practical but light and easy to move around. Good job!

Thanks.. I was going for more of a sports bra meets halter top look. It's sort of an autumn leaf design.

I agree with your sentiment on clothing in comics. If your on a superhero team doing superhero stuff,
tight spandex and body suits aren't always functional and often do look a bit silly. I'll always adore
Jim Lee's designs too, but your redesign just makes so much more sense for Psylocke's character.

It's also the body suits. How will they use the bathroom without getting naked.

Awesome work here dude. All that a side this a nice design, but it's a bit erm 'Too ninja' I mean you did draw inspiration from to series that while they feature giant explosions, but are a bit on the generic side in terms of design. I mean this looks more like something she'd wear to kick Wolverine's ass in her dojo or something than an bit of ninja gear. IE Snake Eyes and the 2000s Ninja Gaiden series but that's just me(though to be fair batman's a ninja and no one gives him crap about having a cape lol )

Being too ninja is better than being too impossibly skintight costume. You are aware that Wolverine walks around in a bright yellow leotard?

Yes I'm well aware of Mr.Snkts fashion statement, and frankly it's better than any of his alternates, sooooo basically what you're saying is ALL superheroes have impractical costumes?

I remember the hooded costume she wore, which was far more appropriate given her psychic/mystic powers. Incidentally, love the reference to her "butterfly-vision" (as I called it) with the hairpins. I was never a big Jim Lee fan, even before his name became synonymous with ALL-STAR BATMAN, and was never grabbed by any of the Image-ified X-Men costumes of the era (not that I was seriously into them at the time ti begin with).

BTW, there's a website, Project: Rooftop, that specializes in putting out there redesigns and updates of superheroes' and villains' costumes by the fans. Some are great, some are terrible, but it's always interesting and never boring. If you want to go the whole nine yards and color this, I'd recommend contributing this.

Far more appropriate than her "ninja" leotard nonsense, that is; this was back when she was kinda "Raven-esque" if you will.

You know, it's funny you mention that bit of trivia. My sensei in the Japanese course I'm taking right now actually told us that when we started practicing writing the onna kanji, which I thought was pretty cool.

Also, love this redesign for Psylocke . I actually think it works better than her original suit, more practical and more in line with her skills as a kunoichi, while paying homage to her heritage (or at least the heritage of the body she mind-jumped into a while back and remained in since). I can definitely see the Soi Fon influence here, but overall, this design is very original, and way more interesting than most superhero costumes out there.

Any plans for redesigning any other X-Men or superhero outfits?

A fine redesign, and I like the fact that you were able to keep her serious face.
Also it's great to hear from you again, I thought you had completely given up on Deviantart.

I didn't give up on it. Just other issues. I've been doing reviewing of NARUTO, BLEACH, and ONE PIECE for the website AnimeVice.com. Reviewing the latest chapters out of Japan.

I was going to say something about her being British but then I dimly remembered something about her being actually ninja trained, so I rechecked Wikipedia and Marvel wiki... lo and behold she was, so never mind that.

The actual costume... not gonna lie I really like the one piece she as on normally, and those leg wrap things to. This look is cool but it feels a bit to "Kunoichi like" It would be nice to be somewhere closer to the middle instead of this far on the ninja side of style.

Her current costume doesn't look ninja. It looks no different than all the other skintight bodysuits the super heroes of Marvel wear. My design actually looks like clothes a human could wear to walk outdoors in.

Well, I can't tell if it looks "real" ninja-ish, I have no idea how real ninja would dress or if they where even that much of a thing... but it does look anime/video game ninja-ish.

In any case, you can argue taste until the end times with little result, It looks good. I just think that while yes super hero costumes are all samey, going full on Disgea Kunoichi is going a bit far to the other side of the spectrum.

A female ninja is much better then a tight bathing suit style. I miss the face tat though.
Plus I think it would be kinda cool if she had her psychic knives as her Wakizashis. The Nerve Needles would make sense actually.

Great job, hope you didn't mind giving my opinion.

I don't miss the face tattoo.

Who's to say she couldn't extend the blade with her powers when needed.

I like reading people's thoughts on the art.

that is a much more appropriate outfit for her, like the change from her katana to the wakizashis, much faster and deadlier, as well as the senbon needles, well done all around on this, man!
